Exhibit Opening: Mercury Mine Elementary School and Pueblo Grande Museum Presents Land and People: Showcase of Artwork by the Mercury Mine Prospectors
April 30 @ 10:00 am - 12:00 pm
You are invited to the exhibit opening reception from 10am-12pm on Saturday, April 30, 2022.
Throughout March, four artists-in-residence and staff from Pueblo Grande Museum provided art workshops to K-6 grade students at Mercury Mine Elementary School in Phoenix. The students painted rocks and learned about meaningful O’Odham symbols, wove beautiful designs with basket artist Yolanda Elias, planted a school garden with artist Jeffrey Lazos Ferns, etched designs onto shells and created elaborate clay pots with artist Jacob Butler, and designed exquisite gourds with artist Arturo J. Ramirez. The workshop series led by the artists focused on Ancestral O’Odham arts and culture.
Upon completing the artworks, a core of dedicated 6th graders from Mercury Mine Elementary School set to work on designing an exhibition about the project. The student curators selected the artworks to be featured in the show, interviewed their peers to write personal labels, selected photos, wrote a title and introductory text, and installed the display.
Both Mercury Mine Elementary School and Pueblo Grande Museum are proud to present the student curated exhibit to you.
The exhibit will be on display at Pueblo Grande Museum until July 23, 2022.
